EXPLORING SWEDEN'S LEADERSHIP IN CLEAN ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES

By: Phanindra Kumar Uppalapati

As an invitee from Organo Eco Habitats, I had the opportunity to participate in a one-day workshop at CII centered on innovative clean technologies and engage in business-to-business meetings with the Swedish delegation. This experience provided valuable insights into how Sweden leads the way in clean energy technologies.

The India-Sweden Innovations Accelerator (ISIA) Programme plays a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between the two nations in the realm of clean energy technologies. Swedish companies embark on a series of trips to India over an 18-month period, seeking to explore the market, establish vital connections, and receive guidance in export strategies from key agencies.

The program's primary goal is to combat climate change by promoting the adoption of clean energy solutions in India, aligning with both countries' emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship.

Sweden, a global leader in green technology, stands out by ranking first in the European Union and third worldwide in the Global Innovation Index. India, celebrated for its dynamic startup ecosystem, ranks third globally according to the 2022 Global Startup Ecosystem Report. Success in the Indian market hinges on adapting to local conditions and aligning with the country's market priorities.

The ISIA Programme revolves around Swedish environmental technology companies offering solutions tailored to Indian market needs, with a strong focus on scalability to accommodate the country's rapid development.

Swedish Government's Energy Policy Targets:

  • Achieving 100% fossil-free electricity by 2040.
  • Aiming for a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector by 2030, primarily through transitioning the transport fleet to electric vehicles.

In India, the Swedish Energy Agency (SEA) has been active since 2009, working on various projects including microgrids, smart grids in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), smart cities, and waste-to-energy initiatives.

During the workshop, numerous companies specializing in innovative clean technologies were in attendance. I was particularly intrigued by the following companies:

  1. Midsummer:

Midsummer is a Swedish solar energy company that specializes in the installation of discreet solar roofs, boasting a 90% lower carbon footprint than traditional solar panels. These lightweight panels, with a minimum weight of 3.5 kg/m², facilitate easy and secure installation without the need to penetrate the roof sealing layer. Midsummer's product offerings include the Midsummer Wave, Midsummer Slim, and Midsummer Bold

  1. Midsummer Wave:

Midsummer WAVE is a wave-shaped solar panel that follows the contours of your roof tiles.

  1. Midsummer Bold:
  2. These lightweight solar panels require no roof reinforcement, eliminating structural costs.
  3. Their durability allows for walking on the panels without damage.
  4. The product acts as additional protection for the roof's waterproof layer, extending its lifespan by shielding it from UV damage.
  5. Midsummer BOLD is available as a complete roof replacement or retrofit for existing roofs, with a maximum panel wattage of 240W.

How Trine Works

  1. Inpipe Sweden:

Inpipe Sweden is a pioneering company that offers innovative, flexible, and environmentally friendly products for repairing underground pipes without the need for excavation. These products, made of fiberglass-reinforced polyester and cured using ultraviolet light, are eco-friendly and durable. Inpipe's innovative solutions help reduce the reliance on fossil-based raw materials, making their product, Inpipe Freeliner, one of the cleanest pipe repair solutions globally.

  1.  Primozone:

Primozone, established in 2000, aims to redefine ozone technology. They have developed an ozone generator with the highest ozone concentration and the lowest lifecycle cost on the market. Primozone's generators adapt to the required ozone levels in real-time, ensuring energy-efficient operation. With the capability to produce high-concentration ozone and supply it at pressure, Primozone's generators are easy to install and maintain, making them a cost-effective and reliable choice.

The GM series offers ten standard size generators. The modular design makes it possible to combine the generators to fit almost all your ozone needs, from small to large demand. The range is capable of delivering ozone from 6g to 2.9 kg per hour, and should more be needed a combination of two or more machines will do the job

  1.  Enerpoly:

Enerpoly focuses on developing and manufacturing zinc-ion batteries to provide cost-effective stationary storage solutions.

How Zinc-Ion Battery Works?

Enerpoly's zinc-ion technology uses zinc metal as anode, manganese dioxide as cathode and a water-based electrolyte. The zinc-ion plays a vital role. Upon discharge, the zinc metal dissolves to zinc-ions on the anode. These ions are shuttled across the electrolyte and are consumed on the cathode, producing electricity. The reverse applies during charge and enables rechargeability of the zinc-ion battery.

Currently the battery cell they are producing in the market is of a 60Ah with a 48V battery pack.

In addition, the battery uses a water-based electrolyte and is non-flammable. In 2022, Enerpoly’s zinc-ion battery cell passed UL9540A testing for safety.

  1. Smart Sensor Devices:

Smart Sensor Devices is a global provider of air quality monitoring solutions. Their range of devices offers real-time data on air quality, including the concentration of elements such as CO2, particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10), and volatile organic compounds (VOC). These devices also measure parameters like humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and light level, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the ambient environment. These devices can be customized to meet specific client requirements.

Cloud Lite PM Solution:

The HibouAir indoor air quality monitoring PM sensor connects to the cloud, providing real-time data on indoor pollution levels and offering analytical tools for access to historical air quality data.

The innovation and commitment displayed by these companies are not only reshaping the clean energy landscape but also advancing the global transition to sustainable and eco-friendly technologies.
